At a glance, The Works climbing venue is just a damp dark hole in the ground, a scar in the landscape from a long forgotten industry. But as you descend the ladder, it slowly becomes clear that all is not as it seems. The old quarry has been reclaimed by nature, with a rich forest of ferns, moss and young trees making it their home. Look a little deeper and the lines of quickdraws draw your eye and suddenly the space is transformed once more; into the countries most impressive dry tooling venue.
This is no ordinary story about a strong man climbing hard things. No, this is a story about a full time father with a mentally and physically demanding job, who is somehow still able to climb at an elite level. Matt Foot dreams of being one of the best dry-toolers in the country. However with little free time available to train and to actually climb outdoors, how will he be able to achieve the unrelenting goals he has set himself while still being a loving nurturing father and husband?
This film project has followed Matt Foot since 2019, documenting his progression in the world of dry-tooling and his journey to climb the three of the hardest dry tooling routes in the country.
This is a self-funded project with a small contribution from Petzl Climbing.
